Note* BIO: On the 1850 Census for Claiborne County, TN, Matthew, 21 years of age, and his young family were enumerated in the household of Matthew's father, John KECK. 'Emaline' (Elmira) was 20 years of age, and the couple had an infant, 4 months old, Wm. P. KECK. There was also a four-year-old, John in the KECK household. In 1860, the couple was enumerated in their own home, and they had John, by that time 13, William, 10, James and Elizabeth. There was also a 'Newton KECK, 12,' enumerated in their household; Newton is thought to have been Matthew's nephew -- the son of William KECK. Although the WFT disk shows only one marriage for Matthew KECK and no children, the 1870 census shows a 45-year-old Matthew KECK two households from John and Rebecca KECK. Calculation would give a year of birth of about 1825 rather than 1829; the adult female in the home is listed as 'Anna', whose age is given as 34. Two of the young people in the household are 'James, 17,' and 'Elizabeth, 16.' These two would be appropriate for the James and Elizabeth shown in Matthew's home in 1860; however, the other individuals named are different from earlier records. The 'William' shown in 1870 is only eleven years of age; William P. should have been 20 by this time. Other names and ages listed are: Sarah, 13; Joshua, 10; Mary T., 8; Tennessee, 3; Rachel C., 2; William SOWDER(?), 11; Margaret SOWDER, 9; and Emanuel SOWDER, 8. (The 'SOWDER' surname is difficult to read, and could be something else.) Denny and Marla BRUBAKER have provided data for Matthew C. KECK from their large Claiborne County database. Per their sources of data, Elmira (Emaline) GOIN KECK died in Dec., 1865. Matthew later married Anna DUNN. The BRUBAKERs cite several sources including 'People's History of Claiborne Co., Tn 1801-1988', 'The Kecks of Claiborne County, TN' by Virginia FLETCHER, 'Claiborne County TN Cemetery Book, by Paul JOHNSON, 'Old Speedwell Families' by Joy Edwards Davis, 'Families of Dallas, Lourens, Rogers - Vol. !' by Zella Rogers Dallas & Eureatha Rogers Lourens, and several internet genealogists with family ties to the KECKs of Claiborne County. Among the biographical details the Brubakers give on Matthew are the following: Matthew deeded two acres of land to the United Baptist Church of Pleasant Point in 1870. Matthew considered himself neutral during the Civil War, and refused to fight for either side. He farmed at night to avoid being reported by his neighbors. Matthew lived near John 'Guider' Keck in Claiborne Co., TN An article about Jacob OWEN, the school teacher from Speedwell, written by his grandson, Butler OWEN, excerpted attendance records from Jacob OWENS record book. On the list of students beginning the school term on August 11, 1862 at 'the Keck school house' includes children of Matthew KECK in attendance--John ('Footney'), Newton, Wm., James L. and Elizabeth Ann KECK were all on that attendance list.
