Note* | Harbour Book: Elisha and William reached Champaign County , OH in early 1800s. In 1808 Joel and Sarah sold their lan d holdings in Patrick County and joined their sons in Ohio , where they settled. Jesse is believed to have made the t rip with parents just after his marriage to Jane Hall. Th e Reverend Earl O. Harbour of Topeka, a descendant of Joel , wrote (in 1968) the following on Joel: Joel Harbour is th e first Harbour in our recorded ancestry. He was a young m an at the time the Declaration of Independence was signed . In 1777 all men were asked to renounce allegience to th e Crown of England and swear an Oath of Allegiance to the C ommonwealth of Virginia. In 1777 in Henry County, Va. Joe l was among those listed as having taken the Oath of Allegi ence. Joel Harbour appears to have served three months a s a private in the Militia from Henry County, and to have b een at the Battle of Guilford Court House. His name was o n a company list which I found printed in a publication o f the Sons of the American Revolution. Virginia did not ke ep official records of the Militia. The military records a re incomplete so this cannot be positively confirmed. Joe l and Sarah Harbour owned land in Henry County in the par t which became Patrick County. Their sons, Elisha, born 17 82, and William, born 1785, were born here. There were oth er children also. Elisha and William went to Champaign Cou nty, Ohio, soon after 1800. The land records of Patrick Cou ntry show that Joel and Sarah Harbour sold all their land , 464 acres, in 1809, so they probably moved to Champaign c ounty, Ohio, to be near their children. Other Harbours mov ed to Tennessee in an early day, others to Ohio and Illinoi s. (End of the Rev. Harbour's account.) Nowhere is his rese arch on Joel is there confirmation of Joel's parentage. Th e late Mrs. Wilbur (Mary Harbour) Grandle, of Rocky River , Ohio was the first researcher to record that Joel was th e son of Talmon and Mary (Wright) Harbour. She was a direc t descendent of Joel and researched the Harbours for many y ears. We, therefore, accept her conclusion, subject of cou rse, to confirmation by later research. | |
