Shelby County and State of Kentucky, on the 19 day of November, in the year 1832 personally appeared in open court before the County Court of Shelby County now sitting Reuben Stout a resident citizen of the county and state aforsaid, aged 76 years and but some months who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832. Sayeth that he was born in the state of New Jersey in the year 1761. When about 10 years old his father moved to Prince William County in the state of Virginia,
where I lived when I entered the military service, which I did some time in the month of September in the year 1780, as a private soldier in the 1st Virginia Regiment commanded by Coln Campbell. My Captain was named Sansun (??) my present recollection. The leutenant's name I can't remember. The ensign of my company was named Robert Opern. The regiment to which I belonged was raised for a service of 18 months. The place of rendezvous was Dumfries from which place we marched to Chesterfield Courthouse about fifteen miles from Richmond where we took up winter quarters. About the 25th of February 1781 we marched out to North Carolina to reinforce General Green. Not long after we joined Gen. Green the Battle of Guilford took place, in which battle I fought. After the battle we retired to Romney Mills, and aftwerards we marched near to Campden, when there [?] little skirmishing with the British and Tories. From this place we moved to various places, until we were marched to the [induction of Ninety Six] in South Carolina, where we moved in the month of June I think. We besieged the fort for some time and after operated sallies and efforts to take the Fort and Garrison and were compelled to withdraw. The army [??] and encamped at the High [hills of Lantee.] The next [??] engagement which took place between our army and the British was the Battle of the Easton Springs. I was not in that battle, being confined over sickness in the Hospital during the fight. Col Campbell was killed in that Battle. I received my discharge at Lallsburg being regularly discharged, but not considering it of any importance to me, I suppose I took no care of it. I have not got it now and I must have lost it. I was discharged in the month of January, 1782 after having been engaged eighteen months in actual service. About two months before our term of service was to expire there were men out of each company in our Regiment detailed to form the Light Infantry. After our time was out we were ordered to join our respective companies and we were discharged as I before stated. I know of no surviving witness by which I can prove the said service to have been done by me except Seth Stratton of this County, and a man named Crewman who was a sergeant in my company and who I am informed lived some time ago in Daviess County in this state about one hundred and twenty miles from this place, which is too far for me to ride, if I was certain he is living there and of that I am no means certain.
He states that he has some documenting evidence of the facts upon which he rests his claims for a pension under the sponsored act. He defers to Peter Vandyke and Seth Strothers who can testify as to his character for veracity, and their belief of his services as a soldier of the Revolution. He states that since the Revolutionary War he lived for twenty years in the County of Culpepper in the State of Cirginia and that he has lived for the last 34 years in this State. He states that he was called into service in the same manner with the rest of the 1st Virginia Regiment which was for 18 months service. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares that his name is not on the pension Roll of the agency of any state of the United States.
Sworn to and subscribed the day and year afixed,
Reuben X Stout
For Peter Vandyke and Seth Stratton having residency in the County of Shelby and State of Kentucky, residing in the same County, hereby certify that we are well acquainted with Reuben Stout who has subscribed and sworn to the above declaration; that we believe him to be seventy two years and upwards of age, as he states, that he is [??] and believed, in the neighborhood where he resides to have been a soldier of the Revolution, and that we concur in that opinion.
Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforseen,
Peter X (his mark) Vandyke. - [S146] Culpeper County Deeds 1787-1788: Culpeper County Deeds 1787-1788, Pages 83-85

Sworn to and subscribed the day and year aforseen,
Peter X (his mark) Vandyke
